Hip pain can affect your daily activities, making finding relief a priority. Bursa injections are a treatment option for chronic pain and can effectively reduce joint inflammation.
Bursae are small fluid-filled tissue sacs that lubricate the hip joints to reduce friction. Injuries, overuse and other medical conditions can cause the bursae to become inflamed and make it difficult to move. While most cases of bursa irritation improve with rest, if you continue to feel pain or the pain seems to worsen, you may be a candidate for a hip bursa injection for treating bursitis.
A trochanteric bursa injection consists of delivering an anti-inflammatory medication directly to the affected hip to reduce pain and swelling. A bursa injection contains a blend of corticosteroid and a local anesthetic to provide immediate relief and a long-term reduction in inflammation.
While anyone with chronic hip pain can take advantage of a cortisone shot in the hip for bursitis, it is a more common treatment for people who frequently perform repetitive activities, such as:
The hip bursa injection procedure is minimally invasive. We start by using an X-ray or ultrasound to identify the exact location of the bursa. Then, we will clean the injection site with an antiseptic and inject a local anesthetic to numb the area.
Once the area is numb, we will inject the steroids into the bursa. After we complete the injection, you will remain in the office for 10 to 15 minutes to ensure you aren’t experiencing any hip bursitis injection side effects.
Most patients report relief in up to seven days, and they continue to feel relief for several weeks to a few months. If you do not experience pain relief or your pain worsens after injection, please contact our office immediately, and we will work with you to develop a new treatment solution.
