An intra-articular (IA) hip injection is a procedure to treat chronic hip pain. During this procedure, your doctor will inject a steroid directly into the hip joint to improve overall function and mobility.
Intra-articular hip injections are effective for treating acute and chronic pain. Some common conditions intra-articular corticosteroid injections treat include:
An intra-articular hip injection is a minimally invasive procedure and typically takes about 15 minutes to perform. We start by cleaning the skin with an antiseptic and placing a sterile drape into position. We will then apply a local anesthetic to numb the skin.
Once we find the target area using an X-ray or ultrasound, we will inject the steroids using a very thin needle. After we inject the steroids, we will have you wait for 10 to 15 minutes after your procedure to make sure you are not experiencing any side effects. Side effects from an intra-articular hip injection are extremely rare, and if they do occur, they typically consist of pain and swelling or mild bruising.
If you are not experiencing any side effects, you can return home after your injection. It can take up to a week before you start experiencing relief. Most patients continue to feel relief for two to four months after their injection. If you do not feel any relief or it does not last as long as intended, our team will follow up with you to find a new solution.
