Scoliosis affects millions of people in the United States. A side to side curvature of the spine, unlike the natural front to back curves of the spine, scoliosis affects individuals of all ages. Smaller, insignificant curves typically cause no serious issues, while larger curves in the spine tend to contribute to a wide range of health issues, including, but not limited to, fatigue, muscle pain, back pain, spinal arthritis, or even breathing issues.
The dedicated spine and back specialists at the NYSI treat varying types of scoliosis, including both degenerative scoliosis and common idiopathic scoliosis. Because of our comprehensive approach to treating this widespread disease, our team has been recognized in the United States as one of the best all round treatment centers for scoliosis. We understand that this disease can affect patients of all ages and that patients can benefit from our specialized care and personalized treatment plans. *
The treatment provided by our spine doctors is dependent upon the severity of your spine’s curvature. Some advanced scoliosis cases require the back surgeons located at our nationally ranked NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases,* to turn to surgical procedures for some patients. Our back surgeons deliver educated lectures across the world on scoliosis treatments and have authored many scoliosis treatment publications as well. For more details, refer to our Spine 101 section.

DIAGNOSIS OF YOUR BACK PAIN
For children and adults who suffer with consistent back pain or neck pain every day, the back doctors here at New York Spine Institute and our certified spine specialists who understand the overall complexities of the spine are committed to providing personalized back or neck pain treatments for patients as needed. They start with a thorough exam that helps to identify the source of your pain, and then take necessary steps to determine the extent of your pain. They gather all the pertinent info they need to present a full diagnosis in advance of prescribing treatment options.
Focus is given to described symptoms and test results when doctors are making their diagnosis. They understand there are a variety of factors that play a significant role in prescribing appropriate treatment options that can vary from bracing to surgical intervention for all our Sayville patients. Our spine doctors prefer non-surgical back pain treatment methods over surgical intervention.

Physical therapy is a significant component of the rehabilitation process. All types of surgeries, whether mildly invasive or advanced surgeries require physical therapy treatment plans. Back or neck surgery patients are apt to experience increased movement and mobility, decreased pain and restored function, and for patients with injuries and impairments, their disability levels are limited * when physical therapy is incorporated into their treatment plan. Physical therapy is beneficial to all of our patients especially those who have daily lifestyles that put additional strain on their necks or backs. For individuals who have suffered a neck or back injury, the team here at the NYSI is the team for you.
Michael Friar, D.P.T., our licensed physical therapist here at the NYSI is dedicated to providing top of the line, personalized physical therapy treatments to all our Sayville patients. The PT team combines cardio and weight machines to target strength and endurance training for all our Sayville patients. In order for a patient to begin physical therapy they must first be evaluated by one of our licensed physical therapists who will determine existing functioning levels, pain threshold and physical restrictions that can contribute to reduced activities. Michael Friar, D.P.T. along with our certified team of PT specialists, will work together to prescribe a personalized treatment plan for you and set practical goals for you to achieve.
The NYSI has a fully equipped radiology department that includes Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) which is safe and noninvasive. MRIs are used for diagnosing a wide range of conditions. Diagnostics allow our radiologists to analyze bone and soft tissue anatomy images which can be used when personalizing care and treatment plans.
Our innovative diagnostic imaging equipment includes: Digital Radiography (DX) x-rays and a high field short bore 1.5T MRI system that supports a wide range of clinical applications including but not limited to MRI’s of the Spine, Brain, Abdomen, Pelvis, Shoulder, Knee, Hip, Elbow, Wrist, Hand, Ankle and Foot.*
A 1.5T MRI system will provide physicians with high quality, detailed pictures they need when evaluating many different musculoskeletal disorders, while the MRI system produces detailed images by way of magnetism and radio waves that are used by our spine doctors and other physicians to evaluate various parts of the body and determine the presence of diseases or disorders which typically cannot be detected by other imaging systems including x-rays, ultrasounds or CT (Computed Tomography).*
Our spine surgeons and neck doctors provide care and comfort to all our Sayville patients in a truly relaxing and calming environment. We provide patients with a choice of music, earplugs and even a comfortable sleeping mask that helps them to feel completely at home.
Our radiology department is also equipped with Long Length Imaging (LLI) for proper scoliosis assessment.
