Scoliosis is defined as a medical term in which one’s spine is curved from side to side. As a result, the spine of that individual may look like a “C” or an “S,” rather than an I or a lower case “L.” There are various treatment options available, such as observation and physical therapy. Spinal surgery is also a treatment option, as it is to potentially help in straightening out the spine.

Of the general population, scoliosis affects everyone, ranging from children to middle aged adults. There is even a chance that scoliosis runs through an entire family. Individuals who have a family history of scoliosis are very prone to developing this diagnosis. Several other causes may include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, spinal muscular atrophy, and tumors.*
There are several factors that may contribute to scoliosis, which may include*:

By taking a physical examination, the curve of your spine is usually defined in terms of severity by the number of degrees. Generally, if your curve is greater than 10 degrees, then it is defined as a “Perfect diagnosis” of scoliosis. Anywhere between 25 and 30 degrees would consider that curve to be “significant.” Finally, any curve that extends between 45 and 50 degrees is not only considered to be “severe,” but it will require a substantial amount of aggressive treatment.*
Your spine specialist will perform a physical exam first to note your back pain history, they will note posture, range of motion, and other observable physical conditions. In some cases, you may need an X-ray, MRI, or CT scan to diagnose the cause of your Sciatica. Visit your New York Spine Spine Specialists for imaging services, diagnosis and proper treatment options.
