Fernando Veliz is a Physician’s Assistant at New York Spine Institute (NYSI). Since 2019, PA Veliz has worked with NYSI’s world-renowned surgeons assisting them in surgeries specializing in anterior cervical discectomies and fusions (ACDF), anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), open and minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF). He also conducts pre-op and post-op patient care as well as diagnosing, patient treatments and prescribing medications.
PA Veliz is a trusted professional among his fellow doctors, surgeons and patients. He is fluent in Spanish and has experience communicating and treating patients in diverse populations.
PA Veliz understands the anxiety and questions patients have before going into surgery. He educates patients about their current medical problems related to the spine including treatments, procedures and prognosis. With each patient, he walks them through the non-surgical treatments, surgery and recovery process, explaining everything in clear detail. He treats patients on an individual level, creating relationships that last a lifetime. He is there to guide them every step of the way before, during and after surgery.
Growing up in Guatemala, PA Veliz always wanted to work in medicine and acknowledged the advanced healthcare systems in the U.S. In the future, PA Veliz plans to travel back to Guatemala and other countries to volunteer his time and skills provide care to people around the world.
PA Veliz attended the University at Albany, receiving his bachelor’s degree in science with a neuroscience minor. He then attended CUNY School of Medicine, completing his master’s program in physician assistant.
